Heatwave

Heatwave

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) defines a heat wave as a period during which the daily maximum temperature exceeds for more than five consecutive days the maximum normal temper- ature by 9 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius), the normal period being defined as 1961–1990.

Causes Of Heatwave

Heat waves form when a high-pressure area in the upper atmosphere strengthens and remains over a region for several days up to several weeks. This traps heat near the earth's surface. It is usually possible to detect heat waves by using forecasting instruments

Impect Of Heatwave

According to a study in 2022, in Europe alone, it was estimated that over 60,000 people died from heat-related stress.

Heatwaves impact human health and well-being, public safety and infrastructure, and the natural environment. Hot extremes including heatwaves have intensified in cities, where they have also worsened air pollution events and limited functioning of key infrastructure.

Broader adverse impacts include:

Agriculture productivity
Labour productivity
Water sanitation
Critical infrastructure damage
Wildlife and animal deaths
Biodiversity
Outdoor exercise and exposure
Globally, population exposure to heatwaves will continue to increase with additional warming, with strong geographical differences in heat-related mortality affecting those with the least resources and without additional interventions and adaptation.
Heatwave intensity varies. Most people can generally manage during low-intensity heatwaves, but as heatwave intensity increases, vulnerable people and people with pre-existing conditions need a warning to protect themselves.

Heatwave Precautions

Keep cool: use air conditioning or a fan, wear light and loose-fitting clothing, and keep skin wet, using a spray bottle or damp sponge and by taking cool showers. Stay hydrated: during days of extreme heat, keep drinking water before you feel thirsty, especially if outdoors or performing physical activity.
